Many of us believe our weaknesses require us to become more like someone else—less like me, more like them.

We think, “Sure, I’m good at hitting deliverables, but I should be better at connecting with my team.” And often, this turns into trying to be who we’re not.

One of my favourite parts of a coaching conversation is defining the real challenge. We start with one way forward, but often end up somewhere else.

A manager might say, “I need to stop focusing so much on measuring project progress and focus more on my team.” Another might say, “I need to sit with one project longer and dive into the detail.”

Beneath these statements is often a hidden belief: “My problems exist because I lack certain talents.”

But what if the challenge isn’t to become someone else—but to reframe the problem through your existing strengths?

Take the first manager—he leads with Achiever, Analytical, and Competition. He needs to measure success to thrive. We explored how he could still measure, but this time measure the growth and contributions of his team—not just project deliverables.

The second client thrives on variety, big-picture thinking, and connection. Sitting alone for long stretches doesn’t energize her—but talking things through does. So we explored how she might build accountability by setting smaller deadlines with colleagues, using collaboration to drive her focus.

Harriet Lerner describes authenticity as becoming “fully present, centered, and our best selves in our most important conversations.”

That’s why I love this work. Growth doesn’t come from becoming someone else—it comes from becoming more of who we already are.

3 Takeaways:

  • Growth doesn’t require fixing what you lack—it requires building on what you already have.

  • Redefining your challenge through your strengths can unlock more authentic solutions.

  • You don’t need to change who you are—just change how you use what’s already true of you.

If you’re feeling stuck trying to grow in ways that don’t feel authentic let’s talk. I help clients uncover their strengths and reshape challenges into something more energizing and authentic.

What challenge are you currently reframing—or trying to? I’d love to hear.
